Foundations of MSLE

Foundations of Multisensory Structured Language Education (MSL) is an introductory course to Orton-Gillingham/Structured Literacy education and training. This 30 hour training course has been designed to prepare educators for either clinical training in the Orton-Gillingham approach (OGP) or Orton-Gillingham training for classroom teachers (OGCE). Approved by the accrediting body OG Canada (forerly CATT-OG), as approved foundational training, the course also serves as an important link to current research for Orton-Gillingham Practitioners currently in practice. This course is now presented as a hybrid course with some content delivered through webinars prior to two days of onsite training. Course completion assignments will be conducted through our online platform. *Completion of this training meets eligibility requirements for Supporter level membership with OG Canada.

Course content: Dyslexia, Introduction to the Structured Literacy and the Orton-Gillingham Approach, Stages of Reading Development, Current Research in Effective Practices for Teaching Literacy, Response to Intervention (RTI) in the classroom, Phonological and Phonemic Awareness and Dispelling Common Confusions, Phonology (sounds and sound-symbol relationships), Orthographic Code, Decoding (from sound-symbol to blending sounds to text reading), Assessment of Reading Fluency.

This course is suitable for educators and parents who wish to learn more about the Orton-Gillingham/MSL approach to supporting learners who struggle with language. Open to classroom teachers, learning assistant teachers, SLPs, school administration, psychologists, audiologists, educational assistants and others supporting students learning to read and spell. The most common feedback from course attendees is that all educators need the content of this course and that they wish they had taken it years before.

This course includes synchronous and asynchronous hours. The synchronous hours with our trainers are held either live and in person or online via zoom and the option is noted with the session dates for the synchronous hours in the time zone presented. Asynchronous content will be opened and course materials will be accessed approximately 30 days prior to the synchronous sessions, marking the start of the course. Registrants will receive an email from your trainer confirming this start to the course.

Asynchronous coursework is required before and after live sessions.

** Our courses are popular and often fill quickly. If you choose to waitlist for a seat, please note that you are not guaranteed a seat in that course, and your waitlist is only for that session. On the rare occasion that a registered person withdraws or moves with enough time for another person to receive materials and prepare for the course, then we will manually connect with the next person on the waitlist.
We do not automatically move someone from one waitlist to another. If you want to join us, be sure to register for a course with a seat available. If you’ve been waitlisted for an earlier course and a seat happens to become available in that earlier course, we can move your completed registration to that earlier course. Please be aware that when you are waitlisted, we do not reach out to you unless a spot opens up. **
